Finding Your Way

You aren’t lost.

You are meant to walk until you need a rest.

Then you find our way back.

I was hiking with my sister and we got lost. The path was marked with red ribbons until we came to a beautiful open meadow up in the foothills. We figured we would see where we were to take a turn for the route back.

We passed two sets of red adirondack chairs – yes, not one but two, and both were painted red – set in this beautiful meadow for guests to take a rest along their journey. But we kept walking. We were looking for a sign… literally.

We reached the end of the meadow with no sign and had to turn back. I was wondering why I couldn’t see the sign to keep us on the path.

We made it back to the red chairs, and there, on the tree behind the chairs, was a sign with an arrow showing the way. We laughed the whole way back, because once we entered the forest again, there were red ribbons everywhere!

Sometimes we look so hard for what we think we should see that we miss what is right in front of us. When we frantically look for answers we miss seeing all the possibilities. When the pressure builds up we lose our sight. This is why we need to pause; to recalibrate our ability to see what is right in front of us and why it’s there – to show us our way back.

Welcome to being human. We have all been there one time or another or many times, where you are so sure of your way that you don’t notice when it gets hard in a way that seems out of place, where there is a sense of pressure that has taken root that wasn’t there before.

  1. Notice when that happens

  2. Take a pause, a deep breath, or a rest on a chair in a mountain meadow

  3. And continue on your path knowing here is where you are meant to be

What happens when you get out of the present moment and into your head of ‘shoulds’ is you shift. You start to believe you know the way, but you just end up getting in your own way.

You start to believe you can control what is out there in response to the lack of control you feel in ‘here’.

The pause is a reset.

A deep breath reconnects your mind with your body – creating a sense of being in the present moment. There is an opportunity here for you to release the desire to control the outside world and regain a sense of control on the inside world.

Red painted chairs in mountain meadows call your soul to take a rest.

Take a pause.
